My son Thomas (aged 13) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just six months ago between Xmas and New Year 2009. Since then we have been through pretty challenging times. Thankfully Thomas has always been very active, very fit and fully aware of the need to eat a well balanced diet especially if he is to full fill his ambition to become a professional cricketer. With Tom's Diabetes, keeping himself fit, eating a balanced diet, controlling his weight, controlling alcohol consumption (when he is 18) is now an absolute necessity to ensure he does not increase his risk on serious long term health issues.
Now this is where I need to be honest and explain why I have decided its “TIME TO CHANGE”. I don’t have diabetes, if I could swap Tom and take it off him giving him my healthy pancreas and me taking his dodgy one then I would. However I am overweight, I don’t eat the best of diets, probably drink more that I should and have high blood pressure at age 35 with a family history of heart disease!!! So if I had been diagnosed with type 1 unlike Thomas I would have had to change my ways. With my current lifestyle, weight and diet I am seriously at risk of getting type 2 as I grow older. I have seen the impact that diabetes can have on a family and I want to be as healthy as possible so I support my son in his quest to not let it affect his goals. I also want to make a change to ensure my whole family can benefit from me being physically, visually and mentally healthier.
Short Term Targets
So the challenge I have set is to lose weight. My target weight loss is three stone or 42lb. I want to be able to run the fun run at my daughter’s school this time next year. I also want to be physically fit enough to challenge for 1st team captaincy role as and when it becomes available or simply continue the 2nd team captaincy role at Read Cricket Club for many years to come.
Long Term Targets
Naturally Lower Blood Pressure to Normal levels and lead a healthy lifestyle.
My Financial Pledge
As a company Pendle Hill Properties will donate £100 for every completed house sale made during the rest of 2010 when hopefully i will have achieved the short term targets.
