A popular Farmers’ Market in the heart of East Lancashire has been given a boost by one of its regular customers.
Andrew Turner, owner of estate agency Pendle Hill Properties, has sponsored new advertising banners promoting Great Harwood Farmers’ Market around the area.
Held on the first Sunday of each month, the market sees Great Harwood’s historic Towngate Square filled with stalls from 8am to 2pm, each selling some of the area’s finest locally produced foods and ingredients.
Mr Turner, who founded Pendle Hill Properties in 2008, said: “I look forward each month to Great Harwood Farmers’ Market and the chance to stock up on some great local produce, so I’m very pleased to sponsor these banners and help boost visitor numbers to this great market.”
The farmers’ market was founded three years ago by Nick and Louise Gaskell, both keen proponents of quality locally-produced food. All the proceeds from stallholder rents are split between five local primary schools.
“It helps the schools with events and other activities they might not otherwise be able to do, as well as providing a great platform for local food producers to showcase their fare,” said Nick. “Obviously, the more people who come the more successful it will be, so we’re grateful to Andrew for helping to promote our monthly event.”
Another delighted customer is Hyndburn’s Labour MP Graham Jones, who said: “This has become a keenly-anticipated monthly event, renowned for the quality and variety of produce on sale. I’m really pleased that another local business, Pendle Hill Properties, has come forward to offer its support.”
One of the bestsellers at the monthly market is the award-winning Malkin Pie, a uniquely local pie created in 2012 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the infamous Lancashire Witch Trials. Devised by Keith and Christine Turner, of Simonstone-based ‘Delicious From Home’, the pie comprises ingredients eaten by the Pendle Witches at their Good Friday feast at the Malkin Tower in April 1612, all under a suet ‘wicca dumpling’ crust’.
“We always look forward to Great Harwood Farmers’ Market on the first Sunday of each month,” said Keith, “and we stock up on Malkin Pie as customers always ask for it.”
The next Great Harwood Farmers’ Market takes place on Sunday June 5th.
